Always Been, Only Been
Suggested Price: $1.00
A soaring ballad that processes the hard-earned lessons that come with human relationships.
Description
Listen to “Always Been, Only Been” here (or on any streaming service) …
Beginning in 1978, while studying music composition at Brandeis University, Billy was fortunate to be invited to score three musicals with one-day-to-become famed TV producer/writers David Crane and Marta Kauffman. The second of those musicals, “Waiting for the Feeling,” was written in 1979. It was actually a rewrite and expansion of the first of those three shows, “A Foundation of Feathers.”
This song, “Always Been, Only Been,” with lyrics by David Crane and Seth Friedman, addresses the challenge of all human relationships: to love another without sacrificing love for the self. It’s a touch challenge, to be sure, and one that may take a lifetime (or longer) to truly understand.
Susan Hardwicke Jackson sang this passionate, searching ballad in the original Brandeis production. Recent advances in technology allowed her voice to be lifted out from the cast’s 1979 recording, which Billy then placed among newly recorded instrumentation (including an expanded flute section). The technology isn’t perfect but it’s wonderful to hear Susan’s soaring voice once again.
The sheet music is available here with melody, choral background, flute and accompaniment. There is no charge to download (although the software requires you to pay at least a dollar — someday we hope to rectify that). Our hope is that you will make a donation to The Jonah Maccabee Foundation, “turning love into action” through our Arts Fund, Jewish Life Fund, and Social Justice Fund.
lyrics
And time for.
And time when.
And the clock by the bed
Divid-ing the dark into unbroken moments.
I have always been, only been waiting.
When tomorrow depended on you,
And the room only seemed half as large,
I looked for tomorrow and asked you to find it,
But tomorrow was here all the time.
I have always been, only been waiting.
Now I lie here awake.
Alone.
Caring for, hurting for, feeling for me,
For me.
You know I could never be enough for you,
And you could never be enough for,
When all that is left is,
I guess that it’s time for.
And I’ve always been, only been,
I have always been, only been,
Waiting
For me.
