Here’s a piano accompaniment for “Just a Dog” …

When Charlie Dreskin (our rescue dog whose pedigree defied description) died at the ripe old age of sixteen, our family was really sad. But we were content knowing that we’d been able to give Charlie a good, long life. Billy then wrote a song for Charlie. It’s really for every dog that has ever been homed and loved and then bid farewell. So for all the dogs we’ve ever loved, here’s “Just A Dog.”

lyrics

He was just a dog
Doin what a dog will do
He’d wake us every night
Barking at God knows who

He was just a dog
Always lookin’ for an open door
Loved to run so hard and fast
Sniffin’ out places to explore

He was just a dog
Strong and brave as Old Yeller
But every 4th of July
He’d hide
Deep inside our cellar

He was just a dog
Taught him “sit” and “wait” and even “catch”
But when we’d throw a toy
He’d make us come and get it
Make us go fetch

He was just a dog
Chasin’ squirrels and rabbits for fun
Undeterred by the fact
That he never caught a single one

He was just a dog
Beggin’ scraps at every meal
He’d leave ‘em in another room
We never understood that puppy’s deal

He was just a dog
Doin’ what a dog will do
Barked at the UPS driver
The FedEX driver
The Amazon driver
And anyone who wore the colors of the United States Postal Service
We guess it was his job
But why he did it (for sixteen years)
We suppose only he knew

He was just a dog
Playful and loyal
And loving and noble
And so much more
But his life could never ever be long enough
Except for that he was everything a dog is for

He was just a dog
Always wanting scratches behind each ear
And belly rubs that never end
Makin’ all his troubles disappear

He was just a dog
Who knew it was his mission to intervene
To defend and protect us
When that evil vacuum came to clean

He was just a dog
Who hated when we’d give him a bath
But for a treat every minute
That dog he sure could do the math

He was just a dog
With wiggling bottom and a wagging tail
Filled with power and might
A barometer we always felt
Of his eternal optimism and delight

He was just a dog
Playful and loyal
And loving and noble
And so much more
But his life could never ever be long enough
Except for that he was everything a dog is for

He was just a dog
Whose love for us was deep and wide
He stole our hearts and held them close
And then he broke them when he died

He was just a dog
Which is saying an awful lot
He left us a truckload of memories
And gratitude
That will stay with us
The rest of our lives
Even if he could not
